Unit 5 - Rational Number Arithmetic

(Beginning Dec. 11th) - Students extend addition and subtraction from fractions to all rational numbers. Then, students represent quantities with number line diagrams and tables of numerical expressions with signed numbers. This allows products of signed numbers to be interpreted in terms of position and direction, using the understanding that numbers that are additive inverses are located at the same distance but opposite sides of the starting point. Finally, students begin working with linear equations in one variable that have rational number coefficients.

Geography

Welcome to 7th Grade World Geography!

As we wrap up February, we will be finishing up our unit on Economics. I've been very impressed by the level of engagement that our students have shown as they have learned numerous concepts dealing with how we use money, allocate resources, and how our economy works. We will look at having our unit test on this unit early in the week of February 24th.

Essential Question for the Economics unit: How does studying economics give us more insight into a country or region?

As we work our way into March we are going to shift gears towards learning about different regions of the world, but before we tackle Europe, we will spend a couple weeks examining World Religions. Students will get a very basic introductions to the religions of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. This will be a relatively quick unit meant to give students some basic understandings of these faiths, which will help us moving forward with understanding different groups of people around the world.

Essential Question for our World Religions unit: How do religious beliefs shape people’s lives and behaviors?

Outside Activities:

Looking for something to do outside of class?  Students have a number of activities on Schoology that focus on our social studies vocabulary.  You can also watch/read the news with your student and discuss things that are going on in the world.
