What's Happening in the Seventh Grade?

English Language Arts

Unit One

Conflicts and Clashes

EQ: When do differences become conflicts?

We will be reading:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling

Nimona by N.D. Stevenson

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Seventh Grade by Gary Soto

We will be writing:

Students will write a narrative essay that is a continuation or sequel of one of the above readings. We will primarily focus on transitions and details within their writing.

Unit 3: Introducing Proportional Relationships

In Unit 3, students explore circles and learn how to measure and describe their key features, including the radius, diameter, center, and circumference. They discover that the circumference of a circle is proportional to its diameter, meaning that when the diameter doubles, the circumference also doubles. This understanding helps them make sense of the formula C=πd and see how it connects to real-world measurement situations. Students also investigate the relationship between the radius and the area of a circle and use this exploration to make sense of the formula A=πr2 Throughout the unit, they use tables, graphs, and equations to represent proportional relationships involving circles, strengthening their understanding of how geometry and proportional reasoning connect.

At home, families can support learning by encouraging students to measure circular objects—like plates, lids, or wheels—and compare their diameters and circumferences. Asking questions such as, “If this circle were twice as wide, what would happen to its circumference?” or “How does the radius affect the amount of space inside the circle?” helps students connect what they’re learning in class to the world around them.

Geography

Welcome to 7th Grade World Geography!

It's hard to believe that we've been in school for a month! In this short amount of time a lot of learning has already occurred and students are settling into the routines of 7th grade.

Our second unit will be focusing on the Earth's physical geography with emphasis on weather, climate, and geology. We will be exploring the relationship between a location's latitude and its climate as well as plate tectonics and all the fun that comes from that (volcanoes, earthquakes and more)!

Essential Question for our Physical Geography unit: Why do we study Earth and its physical systems?

As always, please reach out via email if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting many of you at our parent/teacher conferences on Oct 7 & 9!

Outside Activities:

Looking for something to do outside of class?  Students have a number of activities on Schoology that focus on our social studies vocabulary and work on their map skills. Students also have the Seterra App on their iPads that has a bunch of different interactive map games and activities they can work on too.   You can also watch/read the news with your student and discuss things that are going on in the world.

Science

Welcome to 7th Grade Science! I can't wait to start this new chapter in 7th Grade with you all!

Questions to ask your child:

  • What is life?

  • What do living things need to stay alive, grow, and reproduce?

  • What are all living things made out of?
